The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal: 30th anniversary

The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (FIJM), is the main cultural event of the year in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This festival is the “must” of the rendez-vous for musicians and lovers of mixing sounds from all over the world. The event takes place each year from the end of June until the beginning of July. FIJM, also known as the Jazz Fest, was conceived by a team that created an agency named Spectra Scène (nowadays known as L'Équipe Spectra). The original idea was to create “(…) a summer festival in Montreal that would bring a number of artists together at the same time” (Wikipedia).

At the beginning, it was hard to find the funding to develop this project. That’s why during the first edition of the FIJM held in 1979 the producers could only present two concerts. Nowadays, it is the largest jazz festival in the planet with over 500 concerts and different activities offered during 10 days, from noon to midnight (including a presentation for children every day, The Little School of Jazz). Most of those concerts are outdoors and free to the public. The Jazz Fest reaches over 2.1 million people. This is possible because of the sponsors. Major urban arteries in the Downtown area like Saint Catherine, Jeanne Mance, John Kennedy, Saint-Urbain and others around this perimeter are closed during the FIJM.

Each year there are an inaugural and a final concert. For the 30th anniversary festival’s celebration organizers invited Stevie Wonder to perform for the opening. The result was a very emotive concert, because Stevie dedicated the soirée to his old friend, Michael Jackson, who had recently passed away.



Nevertheless, in order to close this edition with a big party the Festival invited The Afro-Cuban All Stars and Van Van. Those bands performed last Sunday at Rio Tinto Alcan Scene, in the Place des Arts. It was a very special moment to bring Cuban hyperboreans together under the sky of Montreal.

The people of Quebec and Canadians in general love jazz and Cuban music. That’s a fact. The lifestyle here is more relaxed than in other regions of Canada. Maybe because of the Latinity of Quebec’s people they love Cubans. And it is always good for immigrants like us to feel that our new country appreciates our people, culture and traditions. If in doubt about my comments, just take a look at this video and try to identify all the Cuban stars that have visited the Jazz Fest since the beginning to this 30th anniversary.

El Festival Internacional de Jazz de Montreal (FIJM) es el principal evento cultural del año en Montreal, Quebec, Canadá. Este Festival es un rendez-vous obligado para los músicos y amantes de las sonoridades mixtas provenientes del mundo entero. El evento tiene lugar cada año, de finales de junio hasta comienzos de julio. El FIJM, también conocido como el Jazz Fest, fue concebido por una agencia, Spectra Scène (actualmente conocida como L'Équipe Spectra). La idea original fue la de “(…) crear un festival de verano en Montreal que traería a numerosos artistas al mismo tiempo.” (Wikipedia).

Al principio fue difícil encontrar fondos para desarrollar este proyecto. Por eso, durante la primera tentativa de edición del FIJM, en 1979, los productores sólo lograron presentar dos conciertos. En nuestros días, es el mayor festival de jazz de todo el planeta, con cerca de 500 conciertos y diferentes actividades que se ofrecen durante 10 días desde el medio día hasta la media noche (incluyendo una presentación diaria para los niños La escuelita de Jazz). La mayor parte de estos conciertos tienen lugar al aire libre y son gratuitos. Cerca de 2.1 millones de personas asisten al Jazz Fest. Esto es posible gracias a los patrocinadores. Las principales arterias del centro de la ciudad como Saint Catherine, Jeanne Mance, John Kennedy, Saint-Urbain y otras alrededor de este perímetro permanecen cerradas durante el FIJM.

Cada año hay un concierto inaugural y uno de clausura. Para la celebración del 30 aniversario del Festival, los organizadores invitaron a actuar a Stevie Wonder en la apertura. El resultado fue un concierto muy emotivo pues Stevie dedicó la soirée a su viejo amigo Michael Jackson, quien falleciera recientemente.

Sin embargo, para cerrar esta edición con una gran fiesta, el Festival convocó a Afro-Cuban All Stars y los Van Van. Estas bandas se presentaron el pasado domingo en la escena Rio Tinto Alcan, en la Place des Arts. Fue un momento muy especial que unió a los cubanos hiperbóreos bajo el cielo de Montreal.

A la gente de Quebec y en general a los canadienses les gusta el jazz y la música cubana. Esto es un hecho. El estilo de vida aquí es más relajado que en otras regiones de Canadá. Quizás se deba a la latinidad de los quebequenses que amen al pueblo cubano. Y siempre es bueno para los emigrantes como nosotros sentir que nuestro nuevo país aprecie a nuestra gente, su cultura y tradiciones.
